Mehserle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in 2010 and served half of a two-year jail sentence. I wonder: Did Thomas Orloff, the district attorney who charged Johannes Mehserle, the BART officer who pulled the trigger on New Year’s Day in 2009, with murder, miss something?
The latest episode of social unrest in this country ignited by police brutality and systemic racism demands accountability and transparency, but in a statement, O’Malley didn’t say what part of the shooting at the Fruitvale Station in Oakland she’d re-examine. It should be part of a strategy to address systemic racism in policing, but I don’t see how this blazes a trail in addressing police misconduct. Reopening Grant’s case should do more than investigate that past. We already know that Grant wasn’t a threat to public safety when he was shot in the back while he was face down on a BART station platform.
